Six months after a near-fatal automobile accident in Los Angeles, Tiger Woods is returning to the sport he loves most: golf.
Woods revealed on Twitter on Wednesday that he and his son will be playing in the PNC Championship, which will be held later this month at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Fla. "As he said in a tweet, "Although it's been a long and tough year, I am really happy to finish it off by participating with my son Charlie in the PNC Championship," he added. "My character is a father, and I couldn't be more thrilled or pleased. "I am acting as a father." The statement comes less than a week after Woods told reporters in his first public appearance since the Feb. 23 collision that he wasn't sure he'd ever be able to return to the sport on a full-time basis, disclosing that he came close to losing his leg as a consequence of the crash. Prior to his charity golf outing, he added, "I'm fortunate to be alive, but I'm also blessed to still have the leg." "The first and second points are critical. The fact that I'm able to not only be here but also walk without the need of a prosthetic is really thankful to someone above who was looking after me." During the time of the accident, officials believe Woods was driving at a dangerously high speed. He had fractured bones in his right leg and required surgery to fix the injuries, which included a rod in his tibia and screws and pins in his ankle. In a recent interview, Woods remarked, "I'll play an occasional round here or there, a little hit and chuckle, I'm capable of that." "It's a bit disconcerting to watch some of my bullets fall out of the sky much shorter than they used to, but at least I'm able to do it once more without a problem. Until recently, it didn't seem as if I would be able to do this. My participation in the sport of golf has now become possible." After the accident, he will play in his first competitive event since then, which will be a 36-hole tournament. It was revealed last week that he hasn't decided if or when he would return to the PGA Tour.
